About the College
The Working Men’s College was founded in 1854 to provide a liberal education for Victorian artisans and working people. The college has boasted artistic connections from its inception with early tutors including Dante Gabriel Rossetti and John Ruskin. Today our proud tradition of bringing elite art, design and craft to a wide audience continues not least as embodied in our Art and Design Foundation Degree.
What people say
In our latest external examination the examiner said:
“The continuation of high expectation of engagement from students is evident throughout the academic year, and the staff, clearly encourage, a level of rigour in the working practice of students, whilst offering support, and clear critical appraisal.”
“The practical project work in years 1 and 2 continue to place clearly expressed requirements, through well thought out and written project briefs. These briefs address the subject of each assignment, in a realistic, and professionally aware manner. There is also a healthy culture of experimentation implicit in all the practical course work assignments. Allied to this culture is the continuing contextual requirement of the brief, which demands an awareness of contemporary practice from students. The 1st year Professional Practice, Fine Art Pathway has a raft of stimulating projects framed within the context of a required understanding of contemporary practice.”
